Why youth and why TSVP?
TSVP aims to provide youth who possess a strong enthusiasm, resolve and skill to work on sustainable development issues an opportunity to channel this interest in the absence of existing relevant structures...As much as advocacy and fundraising are critical to broadening their participation, providing youth with meaningful opportunities in the field for limited periods of time will go a long way to shaping their responsibility as global citizens in any future capacity they may find themselves, be it parent, professional or citizen. Press Release: The Sound and Fury of the Asian Tsunami

Press Communiqué

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 29, 2004
Mississauga, ON

Mississauga, Dec. 29, 2004 - The Student Volunteer Program (TSVP) is a Toronto-based sustainable development organisation that participates in rehabilitation and redevelopment activities in various developing countries. It serves as a forum for students, and recent graduates to discover, learn and participate in international development and act locally to promote global change. Its primary sectors of work include Information and Communication Technologies, Health, and Education.

A violent underwater earthquake off the island of Sumatra sent huge waves crashing into coastal areas from East Asia to Africa. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake generated a massive tsunami that propagated across the Indian Ocean reaching incredible speeds. As the wave neared costal areas, its speed considerably decreased, but was still powerful and high enough to head inland, destroying everything in its path. The tsunami has wreaked havoc on the communities of eleven countries from Indonesia to Somalia, claiming thousands of lives, displacing millions and leaving billions of dollars worth of damage. The current conservative death toll of 75,000 continues to grow as millions face a bleak future as the threat of diseases and more deaths looms large.

In the wake of this unmitigated disaster, the largest relief effort in history has been started with numerous international, national and community aid agencies stepping up efforts to channel much needed aid to these countries. To these efforts, TSVP is partnering with a major Canadian aid agency in collecting monetary funds, medical supplies and other essential items to be shipped to various countries. TSVP’s relief efforts will be made through its facilitatory role in the "Tsunami Relief Fund," an ad-hoc committee comprising of student clubs, faculty and administration in several Canadian universities. TSVP’s efforts through the relief fund will be focused primarily on university campuses as we aim to actively encourage student involvement in not only raising funds and collecting material goods during the emergency response phase, but also to lobby the Canadian government and multilateral agencies in stepping up their financial and social commitment to meet the needs of the millions affected, and overcome this global disaster.

At this important juncture, TSVP extends its support to all Canadian aid agencies and community groups in their commendable efforts to deal with this crisis. We continue to actively seek the partnership of university and community youth groups under the umbrella of the Tsunami Relief Fund to make an influential impact on campuses everywhere.
